Ebrahim Hussein

Ebrahim Hussein (Professor) is a Swahili thinker, scholar, poet, dramatist, playwright and a chronicler of the African colonial and post-independence situation. His contribution to Swahili literature, particularly in drama and theatre arts makes him one of the most iconic Kiswahili drama luminaries who, along with Professor P. Muhando and Professor A. Lihamba, are recognized as pioneers of African experimental theatre, which has developed to become a firm form. Hussein was born on 5/6/1943 in Kilwa, Lindi region in the British colonial teritory of Tanganyika. He attended school in Lindi and later Khan schools in Dar es Salaam. In 1966, he joined the University of Dar es Salaam and studied Swahili literature, French, Sociology and Drama. He graduated in 1969. Hussein is among the first Kiswahili students at the University of Dar es Salaam who were later entrusted with the duty of becoming the first teachers and scholars in the language. In 1970 he undertook PhD at the Humboldt University in Germany specializing in Drama and Performing Arts. In 1975 he graduated and returned to the University of Dar es Salaam as a lecturer and was later promoted to Professor. He served until 1985. Hussein emerged as a playwright in 1967, when he performed then published Wakati Ukuta (Time is a Wall), which was about 10 years since Graham Hyslop published the first Kiswahili play, Afadhali Mchawi na Mgeni Karibu and Henry Kuria’s Nakupenda Lakini... In the same year, he published Alikiona (Just Deserts). Kinjeketile followed in 1969. It was translated into English in 1977 and performed at the FESTAC festival in Lagos. Mashetani (Devils) followed in 1971. Kinjeketile and Mashetani are political allegories depicting the colonial and post-colonial experiences in Africa. Jogoo Kijijini (Village Cock) and Ngao ya Jadi (Traditional Shield) (1976) – were solo performances based on traditional folktales. Arusi (Wedding), followed in 1980. In 1988 he published Kwenye Ukingo wa Thim (On the Edge of Doom), that depicts inter-alia, the post-colonial challenges of forging ‘nations’ from disparate and mutually suspicious ethnic nationalities. Hussein‘s works are celebrated for their nuanced exploration of social and political themes, often reflecting the complexities of post-colonial Tanzanian society and for a rich use of free verse poetry to convey complex ideas and emotions. The works manifest Hussein’s unflinching yet liberal defence of the African culture, history and identity. His innovative approach to language and form has inspired playwrights, poets and scholars, fostering a deeper appreciation for the African identity and its rich cultural landscape. Hussein is a major literary figure and is among the most studied figures in Kiswahili globally. Though his choice of use of the Kiswahili for his writing may have denied him renown on the international stage for sometime, the impact his works, along with works of others pioneers, on the development and eventual popularity of Kiswahili language and its literature is a greater reward to a greater cause. Kenyan Professor Chacha Nyaigotti, former dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Egerton University, a playwright, scholar and contemporary of Prof. Hussein, explains: Hussein is a profound creator of knowledge in the Kiswahili language whose contribution to literally discourse has helped Kiswahili penetrate the politics realm across the African continent... Prof MM Mulokozi, himself an accomplished scholar and researcher in Kiswahili and African literature, states that, “E. Hussein works always probe the big social and historical issues and challenge the intellect of the reader or spectator.” Hussein has won several prizes, including the Tanzania Writer’s Union (UWAVITA) Prize and the Zeze Award from the Tanzania Culture Fund. In recognition of his contribution to Kiswahili, the Ebrahim Hussein Poetry Prize was established in 2014 through funds committed in the will of his colleague and friend, Canadian film maker, Gerald Belkin (1940 – 2012), to honour him and the language whose authenticity he has championed all his life.

Julius Kambarage Nyerere

Julius Kambarage Nyerere was the first president of Tanganyika from 1962 to 1964 and of its successor state, Tanzania until 1985. He was an anticolonial activist, pan Africanist, political theorist, an essayist, a teacher, a translator, a promoter of Kiswahili language and an accomplished poet. This short biography is not about his statesmanship, which has left a great deal to be desired by people around the world and which already has been documented in countless books but rather about his championing role in Kiswahili and its literature. Nyerere’s contribution to Kiswahili Julius Nyerere was a keen Kiswahili reader, a fluent speaker, a poet and an advocate for adoption of Kiswahili as the official language in Tanzania and in other African countries. His interest in Kiswahili and literature brought him into close association with then prominent poets like Shaaban Robert, Amri Abeid, Mathias Mnyampaya, Mwinyi Hatibu Mfaume and others, directly and through reading their works in newspapers. Nyerere was the first person to translate two of Shakespeare’s works – Merchants of Venice and Julius Caesar to Kiswahili, producing some of the first plays in Kiswahili, Mabepari wa Venisi, 1961 and Julias Kaizari 1972 respectively and proving a point that Kiswahili was well equiped to reproduce such world-class works. As a poet, some of his poems, Usawa wa Binadamu and Chombo cha Taifa were published in 1965 in an anthology booklet – Mashairi a Hekima na Malumbano ya Ushairi by the Union of Swahili poets – UKUTA, for which Nyerere wrote the preface. Nyerere later wrote the four gospels in Kiswahili in poetic form and published it in 1996. The contribution of Julius Nyerere to Kiswahili language and literature goes far beyond his individual works. His government is acknowledged for creating policies and policy environment that enabled the language to be adopted as the national language and language of the government and also established Kiswahili courses at the University of Dar es Salaam in 1967, making the ùniversity the first in the world to offer the course at degree level. Tanzania was also the first contry to incorporate Kiswahili in A-Level curriculum in 1970. This move inspired and produced some of the greatest Kiswahili literary luminaries, who went on to become acclaimed authors and teachers who went on to serve many universities around the world - Farouq Topan, Euphrase Kezilahabi, Ebrahim Hussein, Penina Muhando, May Balisidya, Amandina Lihamba, M. M. Mulokozi and K. K Hahigi, to mention a few. It is arguable that, without the political will and the vision of proudly embracing the language as both a tool of communication and an African identity, Kiswahili literature would not have made the leap it made between 1962 and 1980. This observation is partly based on the rapid advancements of Kiswahili in Tanzania observed during this period. Its also worth noting that these advancements were in the backdrop of retarding environment in the period leading to independence, when the colonial government, under Lord Twinning waged a derogatory campaing to undermine the language by associating it with slave trade. The foundational work of the University of Dar es Salaam, in particular, Taasisi ya Uchunguzi wa Kiswahili (TUKI and now TATAKI) and National Kiswahili Council - BAKITA, bears its success in Nyerere’s government. These institutions executed strategic projects in training and research on Kiswahili that went on to become the benchmark for other regional universities. Nyerere indirectly supported the development of the first monolingual dictionary of Kiswahili by providing subsidy which covered publisher’s editorial work and printing. The dictionary was launched in 1981, and Nyerere received the first copy of the dictionary in his capacity both as the then Chancellor of the University and a committed supporter of the Kiswahili cause. The dictionary has been one of the most outstanding achievement of TUKI. A selection of Nyerere’s quotations about Kiswahili will serve to cast light on his vision and commitment: “... ni wajibu wetu sote kujaribu kama tunavyoweza kuikuza lugha yetu katika kuandika, kusema na katika kuwaza”. (Nyerere in Nsekela 1971:5). (Hungu 1971:32). “Making Kiswahili Tanzania’s language helped us greatly in the battle against tribalism. If every Tanzanian had stuck to using his tribal language or if we had tried to make English the official language of Tanzania, I am pretty sure that we would not have created the national unity we currently enjoy... we have... an enormous duty to continue to promote and enhance Kiswahili. It is a great weapon for our country’s unity” (quoted in Laitin 1992:91/2). “Wapo watu wasiosadiki kwamba jambo lolote la maana linaweza kuandikwa kwa Kiswahili... Lakini si kweli kusema kuwa Kiswahili kilichopo hakiwezi kikatumiwa katika uandishi wa vitabu mbali mbali kuhusu mambo ya utaalam” (Nyerere 1966:v). In the long history of Kiswahili Nyerere’s commitment, pragmatic approach and vision enabled Kiswahili to overcome critical years where the political climate was much in favour of English.

Mathias Mnyampala

Mathias Mnyampala is a celebrated Tanzanian poet, author and a dedicated promoter of Kiswahili language. Despite not having got the opportunity to be taken to school by his parents, through his own efforts, Mathias took himself to primary school at an age of 16 years. After being rejected due to his age, Mathias, not withstanding, continued to attend school and learn by observing what other pupils were taught. In a week he was able to demonstrate astounding ability to read. His comittment won him the teacher’s favour, allowing him to continue to attend school despite the fact that he was already an adult with a wife back home. In the end, Mnyampala’s efforts to educate himself bore fruit by making him one of the greatest Swahili poets, author and judge, translator and a Swahili teacher. Mnyampala made a major contribution to Kiswahili language especially on poetry. As a poet, he wrote masterfully in a traditional Kiswahili rhyming style that requires one to be rich vocabulary and capable of twisting words to give them a sound he chooses. He introduced various types of poetry such as Mtiririko poems (sequence poems), Msisitizo emphasis poems (mashairi ya msisitizo) and Ngongera. Ngonjera, which is a form of poetry that involves two or people presenting opposing sides of a motion in a form of public arguement, is attributed to Mnyampala. In fact, the word comes from Ci-Gogo (Mnyampala’s ethnic language) meaning “Going together” Mnyampala wrote many Swahili manuscripts on poetry, biography, politics and history. He wrote over 29 manuscripts, only a few of which were published during his time. Mathias continued to write even while lying on his sick bed. He wrote his Biography - Maisha ni Kugharimia, after having sensed that he would not survive his sickess. After his death, in 1969, his works were carefully preserved by his second son, Charles Mnyampala, who later handeds them to his granddaughter.??? Neema Charles Mnyampala. Mnyampala worked as a clerk in various offices in the colonial government between 1942 and 1960. As a tax clerk, Mnyampala travelled the whole Ugogo region to collect tax anpro d establish a census of the populations and their belongings. This gave him an opportunity to come into contact with the the Gogo traditional chiefs and rainmakers, who shared with him the oral sources that he used to write this historical book - Historia, Mila na Desturi za Wagogo. He was pioneering in Kiswahili in the early 1940s the ethno-history trend and in the same time was a faithful messenger for special correspondences between the then Freedom Fighters Movement - Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) and the chiefs. After the independence of Tanganyika in 1961, Mnyampala continued his administrative career in the judicial system as a magistrate. His former pro-TANU sympathies and his literary talent allowed him to become the national chairman of the association of Kiswahili poets called Usanifu wa Kiswahili na Ushairi Tanzania (UKUTA). This association was in charge of promoting the diffusion of Kiswahili, the official language of the new Tanzanian nation, by teaching to the Tanzanian masses the classical forms of Kiswahili poetry. Mnyampala is recognized as the founder of the Swahili ngonjera. His contribution to the Swahili language, especially in poetry, is truly immense. Mnyampala died on 8 June 1969 in Dodoma, Tanzania. His exceptional contribution to the development of Kiswahili and to Kiswahili won him recognition by poets of his time as one of the greatest poets. In 1987, he was recognised posthumously as an outstanding artist by the ministry of culture. In 1994, he was awarded a Medal of recognition of the United Republic of Tanzania by President Ali Hassan Mwinyi in 1994.

Muhammed Said Abdulla

Muhammed Said Abdulla or Abdullah (25 April 1918 – March 1991), was a Tanzanian Swahili novelist who is often credited as a pioneer of Swahili popular literature. Muhammed Said Abdulla was born in Makunduchi, Zanzibar to a Muslim family. He received his secondary education at a missionary school, and after graduating in 1938, began working for the state Civil Health Department as an inspector. While there he served as editor for the Department of Agriculture's Swahili Bulletin.[2] Abdulla went into journalism and in 1948, he became editor of the newspaper Zanzibari. He later became assistant editor of Al-Falaq, Afrika Kwetu, and Al Mahda. From 1958 to his retirement in 1968 he served as editor of the agricultural magazine Mkulima. In 1958 fiction work Mzimu wa Watu wa Kale (Shrine of the Ancestors) won top honors at the Swahili Story-Writing Competition held by the East African Literature Bureau; in 1960 the work was published as a novel. The novel was noted for breaking away from folktale traditions that were popular in Swahili literature at the time. Mzimu wa Watu wa Kale marked the first appearance of Bwana Msa, a detective character that features in most of his subsequent works.[2] The plots of Abdulla's later novels became progressively more and more complex and sophisticated. These plots usually involved a protagonist who must battle ignorance and superstition in order to resolve the conflict.

Ndyanao Balisidya (May Lena Matteru)

May Lenna Balisidya Matteru (Ndyanao Balisidya) was a Tanzanian Kiswahili author, scholar and social activist. She attended primary and secondary school in Dodoma and received a BA from the University of East Africa at Dar es Salaam in 1970. In 1971, she was elected to the Swahili National Council of Tanzania were she served two terms as vice-chairperson. In 1973 she became a lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam. In 1978 she received her MA in oral literature at the same University. In November 1987, a month before she died, she obtained her PhD in African literature from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. May was among the foremost promoters and renowned scholars of Tanzanian and African Oral Literature, a stern developer of Kiswahili language, and an excellent teacher who challenged her students and not even once treating them as Paulo Freire’s empty pots but making them formulate freely and give their opinions openly about the numerous literary topics which she dealt with in and outside the classroom. As a writer, her works left a lasting effect both in content and form. She was among the first to appraise Tanzania’s blueprint for the country’s development strategy - the Arusha Declaration. She was an Advocate for equality among all people as she shows in her novel - Shida, the plight of the people of the lower classes where, she cautions, the economic rift between the leaders and those they lead is getting bigger and bigger. (FEMK Senkoro) May was a firm, hard-working and charming teacher. Despite her terminal illness, which she was aware that would soon end her life, she continued to work and study undeterred, vowing not to be intimidated by death. In a letter she wrote to the head of her department during her time of sickness she said... “If death comes in a month or more, let it come. Dying is inevitable for every human being. I will not live in fear that death will come at any time, for I have no control over it. I will live a life unfettered by the fear of death. Therefore, I will continue with my academic work as usual until my time comes. I will continue with my studies until I complete.” Her works include Shida, Mihati, Akusamehe shambi zako, a jointly authored play Harakati za Ukombozi, a children storybook, Ayubu and a novel, published posthumously - Ushindi wa Majeruhi.
